Recommendation of the month
Scientists must be free to learn, to speak and to challenge. Kirsty Duncan.
In this inspiring session, scientist and professor Kirsty Duncan, Canadian Minister of Science and Sport from 2015 to 2019 and Member of the Canadian Parliament, shares her own experiences to illustrate why it is necessary for the scientific community to have the freedom to challenge the establishment, to speak without intermediaries or political censorship and to continue learning and sharing in order to promote collective knowledge. As Duncan rightly says “in the technological era, survival depends on discovery, innovation and science”. Fake news and other mechanisms which, unfortunately, are common in today’s global society, are extremely harmful when we talk about progress.
To discover means to stop ignoring and this is the key to move forward and evolve. A fact as essential and logical as this one should not be subject to biases of any kind. As Horace said, sapere aude (dare to know).
