Women in the world of wine captivate me automatically because I still see them as pioneers (certainly, it is still a very masculine and boomer universe) and even more so if, as is the case, they have an entrepreneurial spirit and a taste for all things human, art and aesthetics.
It is clear that, regardless of whether a business is online, offline or hybrid, models with soul and purpose have something that makes them special and EL VINO DEL MES is one of them. We explore in depth this ecosystem born in A Coruña with the people who have made it possible: the sisters Judit and Leti Cabana and Juan Miralles.

1.What is EL VINO DEL MES and who are its members?
EL VINO DEL MES is an online wine shop through which we intend to put a disruptive point in the sector so that, whatever your knowledge of wine, you have your space and you can enjoy it in all its essence. Sometimes as consumers we feel that the references are endless and we don’t know where to start or which wine to choose. With EL VINO DEL MES we want to make it easy and, therefore, every month we make a selection of twelve great wines from small producers, unique bottles that are difficult to find or wines that have surprised us for a particular reason. We are committed to projects that value the product, have respect for the environment and the production and, of course, we praise the people behind them, those who are committed to doing things well 🙂
The idea is to discover good wines and try new things, so we also prepare subscription packs in which our customers receive 2, 4 or 8 wines every month. These packs are being very well received because they are fully customisable and always include great wines.
It all started with Judit and Leti Cabana, two sisters and entrepreneurs from A Coruña who love wine (it runs in the family) and Juan Miralles, a young creative from Cádiz who is in love with Galicia. We had had the idea in our heads for several years and during the first lockdown we decided to go for it.

2.In a world that is usually very product centric, you decided to bring wine closer to people… What role does human factor and personalisation play in your universe?
We are person centric in all spheres of life, for better and for worse (if at all). Personalisation in any business today is a must and, in our case, it is really key. We always try to get to know our subscribers, to let them tell us about their tastes, their concerns and to know what they fancy at any given moment so that we can suggest wines every month that they really enjoy and open up their horizons.
We also think it is very interesting to tell the story behind each wine, to show the people who make the project possible and to see how it is linked in some way with your own story and the moment you are living. People are always what make the difference in any company, brand or product and that’s why we like to put them at the forefront. In the end, it is all about stories of people who make wine and people who enjoy wine, who meet without seeing each other. It’s a very peculiar way of getting to know someone.

3.You also talk a lot about “moments”. What do the intangibles represent in the experience of enjoying a wine?
We understand that the purpose of wine is exactly what you say: to enjoy it. And that can be done in many ways. That’s why we like to present our wines linked to moments of consumption. Sometimes it happens that you choose a wine according to the context in which you are going to enjoy it: sharing a pizza with your friends, on a first date, celebrating a special occasion, reading a good book or watching This is Us with your core group of friends 🙂

4.There is a lot of family legacy, purpose and commitment in your project. In what examples does it become tangible?
To a certain extent, this project has allowed us to reconnect with our essence. At our parents’ house there is always a new wine to try or a bottle we keep for a special occasion.
Our commitment to sustainability and local projects is, to our understanding, the only way to approach things in the 21st century. And in our journey during these months we have to say that we have been lucky enough to discover truly inspiring people, with an infinite love for what they do, who fight to preserve the knowledge they inherited from their families and who, in several cases, have left everything behind to return to the countryside and develop projects that contribute to building a better present and a better future, sustainable, respectful of the planet and with a clear commitment to quality products.
The three of us come from very different work and life experiences, but at some point we realised separately that this type of project is what we want to dedicate our time to and invest our energies in.
We try to materialise our commitment in small actions that, at least for us, are what make the difference: having 100% vegan, recycled and recyclable packaging, introducing in our selection wines from alternatives that share our values of sustainability and respect for the land, or linking our monthly tastings to local artists who we believe have a powerful and committed message in their work.

5.You are a very diverse team in every sense of the word. What advantage does this bring in a world that has traditionally been associated with a very specific environment and segment?
Diversity always contributes. Always, always. It allows us to learn about positions that we would probably not otherwise take into account and sheds light on issues that we often take for granted.
In this sector we find it especially necessary to include different points of view, because if you think about it, EVERYBODY drinks wine! Or almost everybody. It leads us to think that there might be more than one way to enjoy an experience that, as you say, is traditionally associated with a very specific profile. Our team is very heterogeneous and that’s great. Perhaps one of the things in which we are most different from each other (although it may seem strange) is our relationship with wine. There are some for whom wine is not their first choice, or who have only recently started to introduce it, or who are going through that stage in which you only drink white wine…
And then there are the experts. When we get together to taste each month’s selection, all these voices have an opinion and we each have a different appreciation. It’s great fun to see the very different reactions that a single wine provokes. It is also very enriching and a good learning experience that we like to apply in the business and in other aspects of our lives.

6.EL VINO DEL MES was born in the middle of the pandemic and is a perfect example of agile thinking. What are your secrets to make things happen? We are a multidisciplinary team with experience and background both in the sector and in the channel and, although we still have many challenges to tackle and many details to optimise, teamwork, focus and the desire to contribute have been key in these months.
But probably the only secret has already been mentioned before: it is the people. We are very lucky to have a great team of incredible people who really believe in what we do and to whom we owe a lot. Carlos, Miriam, Sonia, our partners and suppliers; all those people behind the wines we select and, of course, our customers who support our project and give us the opportunity to enjoy doing what we love.
People are the driving force behind EL VINO DEL MES.

Thank you very much for sharing your passion and your purpose with us, superteam!

I met the EL VINO DEL MES (in capital letters) team at a talk this autumn organised by Ladies, Wine & Design and thanks to Liza Lamas, a digital marketing crack.
