Visual & Art Director and Offline Time Experience genius, Edel is also an expert in art exhibitions. His visual storytelling (when creating fashion retail displays, decorating a house or arranging a setting for his beloved fashion dolls at his Instagram account edelmo) is powerful and inspiring. Who better than Edel to discuss creativity and how can we apply it in our day-to-day:

1.What’s creativity?

The act of creating is difficult to define. It’s an energy stream that springs from deep inside. It’s individual but at the same time it can be collective. It’s the ability, the process we follow from thinking to making. It’s a gift, especially in these days.

2.How can we express our creativity?

There are multiple ways to do it. You can use a more artistic or visual approach by painting, sculpting, writing, dancing or acting … But creativity can also be expressed in techniques applied to many different fields: companies, governments, research and science or even the way parents educate their children. We all enjoy the fact of being creative and we need this part of us to help us. If we pay attention, we apply creativity in plenty of daily routines without even thinking about it.

3.This is quite obvious, but … What’s the relation between creativity and art? And what can we learn from it?

The pieces of all artistic disciplines are the outcome of a creative process. Art is then the logical conclusion of a creative process. Here we could open a wide debate about how specific artists or pieces are able to reach a huge amount of people. Whatever the case, most of the times artists are not able to explain or understand where their creativity comes from. So their pieces become the outcome of an irrational, even passionate process. In fact, if we try to rationalise creativity, most probably it will lose its charm.

There’s a very insightful quote that says: “Create first, analyze afterwards”. Both processes are opposite. They work in a natural flow. It’s quite odd to see that, in the corporate world, this process is the other way round: analysis comes first and then creation. It’s not the natural way to apply it.

4.What are the different steps of a creative process?

Of course, inspiration is the first step. This is an enormous, awesome word. Inspiration comes from a mysterious corner. It’s an impulse that makes us imagine and envision. It’s a very thin energy thread that lead us to create.

Once we receive this impulse, we can follow different steps, depending on the discipline we embrace when creating or the kind of project we are developing. Whatever the case, the steps we take will make this idea real. Afterwards we follow steps such as analysis, application or reproduction, setting-up, exhibition … The choice is very wide.

5.Which elements might inhibit creativity in human beings?

As we said, the options are as wide as the creator’s profiles. We all are creative. Humans share the same neurological design and our vital experiences make us adopt different routes and personal approaches. Howard Gardner, in their theory, talks about eight different human intelligences (spatial, logical-mathematical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, linguistic, natural, ….). Each one of us feels more comfortable in specific intelligences, depending on our natural talents. When we are aligned with our natural intelligences our creativity flows. Therefore, repressing or deviating those natural talents might jeopardize our creativity.

6.Which scenario makes creativity blossom?

Freedom, which is as deep and private as our thinking. In a creative process, we are ourselves. The best creative results come when we look deep inside, without prejudice, when we try to connect with ourselves, when we listen to ourselves and talk to ourselves too, when we forget conventions. This works not only for creativity, but also for the biggest decisions in our life. Relevant actions, what is truly essential, should be the result of an inner exercise with ourselves.

Creativity also needs time. In these hectic days, online impulses are not as inspiring as offline ones. When we visit a wonderful museum online, the experience is totally different than visiting it physically. We can perceive the smell, listen to the silence, praise the light effect and use all your senses … There’s no doubt that the quality of the offline perceptions when talking about inspiration has a different dimension.

A million thanks for unveiling the secrets of creativity, Edel!

Edel Devora is a very unusual profile: he combines an extraordinary creative spirit with a unique talent to consolidate teams.
